Talking to people with epilepsy and their caregivers about the serious risks, including the risk of dying, can be empowering, and it doesn’t have to take a lot of time.  The first three videos demonstrate how to have these conversations effectively.  In the final two videos, families share why they want to know about the risk of dying from epilepsy and clinician shares why it is important.

Family Stories

In this video Megan, Hank’s mom, shares her family’s experience with epilepsy and why they want doctors to discuss the risk of dying from epilepsy and that even though the information can be scary, it is important to have the conversation so people have the tools they need and can do their best to keep people with epilepsy safe. Dr. Rebecca Garcia-Sosa shares the importance of sharing all the risks of epilepsy including the risk of death, even when the risk seems to be low.

In this video, Carrie, Sophia’s mom, shares her family’s experience with epilepsy and how doctors are the experts how people with epilepsy are turning to them for information; finding out about the risks online can be scary, especially when you don’t know what it means for your loved one.  These conversations can help protect people with epilepsy. Dr. Rebecca Garcia-Sosa shares the importance of educating people about the risks of epilepsy and what they can do to take control of their epilepsy.
