Access to Comprehensive Epilepsy Services

Patients need to be assessed for the following at their initial visit, annually and at times of life transitions if epilepsy is refractory to appropriate trials of at least two anti-seizure medications.

Clinician actions
  • Refer to comprehensive epilepsy services when epilepsy is refractory to appropriate trials of at least 2 anti-seizure medications. Find an epilepsy center.
  • Refer to comprehensive epilepsy services and discuss the patient’s candidacy for the following comprehensive epilepsy services:
    • Surgery and neuromodulation.  When making referral, communicate any concerns about surgical options with providers.
    • Seizure management options such as diet therapy, clinical trials, and diagnostic tools such as prolonged EEG monitoring, advanced neuroimaging, and genetics evaluation.
