Preventing Epilepsy Deaths: Clinician Toolkit
Pediatric Examples of Empowering Conversations

When your pediatric patient has high-risk medical comorbidities

Consider referring your patient to other specialty doctors

These other conditions also present a substantial risk for you. How would you feel about working together with your [insert specialist] to get them under control?

Is that really important?  The [insert condition] isn’t even related to epilepsy, and [child’s name] already has so many appointments and is missing a lot of school.  Honestly, I’m more worried about that right now.

I know it is a lot of appointments, and I want to help this team best take care of [child’s name] as possible, and that means we do need to include a physician who can best manage [insert condition]. I want to refer you to a colleague who can help [child’s name]. I know working with multiple doctors can be time-consuming and difficult to arrange and some of the parents I work with find it overwhelming. I want to make it as easy as possible for you to manage all the aspects that come with multiple health conditions. Have you ever worked with a care coordinator?
