When your pediatric patient has mental health considerations

Use additional resources to treat mental health and substance dependence

I notice [child’s name] is [a specific behavior exhibited]. Can you tell me how [child’s name] has been feeling so I can help?

I don’t think we need to talk about it.  I don’t believe in “therapists” and [child’s name] will get through this.

Many of my patients with epilepsy also have challenges with mental health. It can help to have someone on the team with experience in [symptom]. In fact, sometimes the medication we use to manage seizures can impact mood. Would you be open to having a conversation with a specialist, even if it is just to review medications? The good news is there are lots of ways we can help children get through this, including different medications or community services. How do you feel if I make a referral to someone I trust who has helped many of my patients?
